Rabbi Meir Kahane is a member of the Israeli Knesset. According to public opinion polls, the movement he heads is gaining enormous power among Israelis, and particularly among the young. Kahane has long been a thorn in the buttocks of the wealthy and entrenched Jewish leadership. His founding of the Jewish Defense League, his demands for Jewish defense of poor and elderly Jews in the inner cities, his taking to the streets in the late '60s and his use of violence to draw international attention to the Soviet Jewish problem, have all gained him the hostility of so-called Jewish leaders. In Uncomfortable Questions for Comfortable Jews, Meir Kahane touches the most painful nerves and psyches of those Jewish liberals who would prefer to believe that Judaism and Zionism arc compatible with liberal concepts. He challenges us all with such agonizing questions as If a Jewish and Zionist state was created in Israel to guarantee a homeland for Jews with a guaranteed permanent Jewish majority and Jewish sovereignty, will Arabs be allowed to peacefully and democratically become a majority and turn Israel into an Arab nation? • If the answer is "No," isn't that a contradiction of the western democratic thesis "one person, one vote"'? • Is Zionism, which calls for a Jewish majority, not in total conflict with Western democracy, which insists on majority rule, no matter who constitutes the majority? • Can any Jewish leader or even an average Jew offer a young Jew any logical reason not to marry a non-Jew? Or even the slightest logical reason to insist on being a Jew rather than a "human being"? • Is Israel a Jewish state or is it a Hebrew-speaking gentilized one whose secular youth haven't the slightest idea of what Jewishness is and who dream of living in the fleshpots of the West? • How many Arabs will sit in the Knesset in ten years? In twenty years? Will they become a majority and vote Israel out of existence? • Does that matter? • Does anyone care? These are but a few of the challenging questions Kahane asks and it is the reason Jewish leaders have tried to build mountains of antagonism against him to insure that this book is buried and that Jews do not read it. Uncomfortable questions indeed—and Rabbi Kahane offers Jewish answers. The language and the ideas are not "polite" and "temperate." He isn't following the doctrine of phoniness to "be nice" because, in the end, he is talking about a single issue Jewish survival.

Bristling with insight and emotion not only for a Pro Israel/Jewish Activist, but from a brilliant Rabbi as well. He was a remarkable man who went against the placating Establishment to say the least. And what did he get? In 1990 a bullet in the head and body by a man named Nosair. Cold blooded murder. Nosair only did two years and they let him out. And what did he do then? He was one of the masterminds behind the 1991 World Trade Center bombing, in collusion with Osama Bin Laden and the famous Blind Sheik. 6 people dead there, a thousand injured. Even people who are on the total opposite of Rabbi Kahane's views and actions should read this. Just as I have read memoirs of people on the other side of the spectrum than I, reading them and paying attention will always give me a deeper insight on this world we live it. Peace.Product details

Uncomfortable Questions for Comfortable Jews Meir Kahane 9781460970256 Books Reviews
I wish I had read this a long time ago; I suspect it would have greatly affected the trajectory of my life and how I chose to raise my child. Of course all I've heard is how Kahane is a racist, was outlawed in Israel etc. In truth, as I read this I kept saying to myself "Kahane was right". He called it as he saw it and didn't mince words which I really respect. He was prescient in his observations; what he forecast has and is coming to fruition. A must read so long as you're willing to open your mind beyond what the liberal left tells you to think.
Great book.
Book in very good shape
Must read book
No matter how you feel about Rabbi Kahane, read this book. It is a painfully important one - one of the most important books you will ever read.
To my great surprise, the greater part of the book did not deal with the Arab problem in Israel. Certainly, that problem was given prominent place and an all-too-cogent and painful analysis, but the greater part dealt with truly unbelievable things done by Israel Jews that I and most American Jews know nothing about.
The un-Jewishness of what is not too accurately called "the Jewish State" is painfully detailed here, and we see what Kahane calls the growth of a "Hebrew speaking gentile" within the young generation of Sabras.
Perhaps the most important chapter deals with just how this came about as early political Zionism dropped Judaism and attempted to create a Jewish `nationalism' free of any religion. "The last of the Jews and the first of the Hebrews," as it was put, resulted, in the words of Kahane's remarkable analysis (replete with frightening quotations and examples) in a society which is totally empty, not only of Jewish values, but in one which apes the worst of the materialist west.
His description of the deliberate attack on the Irgun ship, Altalena, in which 20 Jews were killed by a Hagana group headed by Yitzhak Rabin, was within the context of unbelievable descriptions of physical assaults by leftists on Kahane's own rallies. Indeed, the fact that Kahane, a Knesset member, was barred from appearing on State TV and radio as well as in schools to which students invited him, makes one pause, and think very carefully about democracy and those who shout most loudly about it.
Kahane makes the statement (which after reading it, seems so immutably logical and basic) that there is a fundamental contradiction between Zionism and a Jewish state on the one hand, and western democracy on the other. A Jewish state can only mean a state where Jews are sovereign and masters of their own destiny and this, in turn, can come about only if Jews are the majority. Western democracy, of course, rejects any majority based on a specific ethnic, national or religious group. As Kahane puts it Do the Arabs have a right to peacefully, non-violently and democratically become the majority and vote Israel out of existence as the Jewish state? He touches the most painful nerve and psyche of the western, liberal Jew who would like to believe that Zionism and a Jewish state are compatible with his liberalism and western values.
Get the book. Read it. Be as uncomfortable as I became. But perhaps we will be able, through this, to deal with the very real life-and-death issues that Rabbi Meir Kahane raises.
Excellent thought provoking book. Rabbi Kahana in his own words, honest, unapologetic and brutally honest about the issues facing Jews today.
I'll slog through it. I might have found a better book by the Reb, but this will get me started.
